DEREHAM SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTRE PROJECT

2012. This is my biggest project so far. I was asked to develop a multitude of themed murals to Fill the walls and halls of a Special Education Development centre in Derham.
The artwork was to cover 22 walls and I had 4 weeks in which to have it done by. One of my favorite parts was this painting in the Rainforest room standing 8ft high by 11ft wide.
This Amazone Waterfall part was in the entrance to the rainforest room and proved to be a little difficult to paint due to the room acess, hence why I could only get a picture of it from the side
To help the main mural blend with the room, I made it look like the folage was 3D against the side wall.
The next theme, which runs throughout the building, was to be based around the crumbling stones of a castle. Amongst the ruins would be holes through which a fairytale scene would be painted.
There were a lot of objects and obsticles to paint around and tring to get them to look like they belonged was a bit of a challenge, the clock worked well but not so much the fire extinguisher...
I thought this idea worked well as the bean stalk started off in a difrentpart of the room but then draws your eye around to the scene of the giants castle.
Some of the images were painted low down for very young children, I picked more storybook images for these murals.
This image is just one of a far away kingdom so that the idea of the stone castle walls work with the images around. The wall sconse, with the flames, again just adds a bit of atmosphere and 3D.
One of the most popular book characters is the gruffalo so I just had to do a painting of him and the mouse featureed here.
Another example of the 3D effect for an archway leading into fields, this idea was to give the impression that the corridor was wider than it was.
The corridor leads down to a special play pen play area, this area was designated for toddlers. The design for this was to have plenty of smiling/happy animal faces and lots of green colour.
Then lastly in the corridoor was the far wall with a colourfull sunset, butterflies and a Thought tree, where parents could stick post it notes with their thought on as a kind of feedback option.
This room was designd with special children requirements and early learning needs. The use of coloured shapes and numbers helps with thought analysis and recognition techniques.
